My Solar Inverter Stopped Working โ€” What Do I Do?

Inverter failure is the #1 cause of solar system outages. Here's how to diagnose it, reset it, and file a warranty claim directly โ€” even if your installer is gone.

What to do when your inverter fails

Read the inverter status lights

Walk to your inverter and check the LED status lights or display screen. This tells you what's wrong before you call anyone.

Solid green: Inverter is communicating normally โ€” issue may be with panels or monitoring, not the inverter itself.
Flashing green: Normal operation at partial capacity โ€” common in morning and evening.
Red or orange: Fault detected โ€” this is a warranty situation. Note the error code.
No lights: Check your solar breaker and AC disconnect switch first.

Try a manual reset

A reset resolves about 20% of inverter faults. Try this before filing a warranty claim.

All inverters: Turn off the AC disconnect switch โ†’ wait 60 seconds โ†’ turn back on. Wait 15 minutes before checking.
Enphase IQ Gateway: Hold the reset button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes, or reset via the Enlighten app.
SolarEdge: Use the on/off switch on the inverter. Wait 2 full minutes before turning back on.
Tesla Gateway: Use the Tesla app โ†’ Energy โ†’ your system โ†’ Support to initiate a remote reset.
SMA / Fronius / Growatt: Power off via the DC disconnect, wait 5 minutes, power back on.

โš ๏ธ If the fault returns within 24 hours after a reset, you have a recurring hardware failure. A reset is not a fix โ€” file a warranty claim.

Confirm your installer status

If your installer is still in business, call them โ€” they are obligated to diagnose inverter failures under the workmanship warranty.

If your installer went bankrupt or closed: your inverter manufacturer warranty is completely unaffected. Skip to Step 4 and file directly with the manufacturer.

โš ๏ธ Not sure if your installer is still open? Google their company name. A disconnected phone number, closed website, or bankruptcy filing means you go directly to the manufacturer.

Enphase Microinverters

Enphase microinverters have a 25-year warranty โ€” the longest in the industry. Individual microinverter failures are common and straightforward to claim. Enphase can identify failed units remotely through your Enlighten monitoring account.

How to claim: Log into Enlighten โ†’ go to your system โ†’ identify which microinverters show as not reporting โ†’ submit a warranty claim at enphase.com/support. If your installer managed your Enlighten account, request an ownership transfer first.

SolarEdge inverters have a 12-year standard warranty, extendable to 25 years. SolarEdge has a dedicated homeowner warranty process and can diagnose inverter issues remotely through their monitoring platform.

How to claim: Submit at solaredge.com/warranty or email warranty@solaredge.com. Include your inverter serial number, install date, error codes, and your address. For monitoring access issues, email monitoring@solaredge.com.

Tesla / Gateway Solar Inverter + Powerwall

Tesla handles all warranty service in-house through the Tesla app โ€” you don't need a third-party installer. Tesla dispatches their own certified technicians for all warranty repairs.

How to claim: Open the Tesla app โ†’ tap your energy system โ†’ Support โ†’ Schedule Service. Select "Warranty Issue" as the reason. Tesla will diagnose remotely first, then dispatch a technician if needed.
