Bankruptcy Filed June 2025

Sunnova Filed for Bankruptcy. Here's What You Need to Do.

If Sunnova installed or financed your solar system, your manufacturer warranty is still fully valid. Here's exactly what happened and what to do next.

✅ The most important thing to know

Your manufacturer warranty — with companies like Enphase, SolarEdge, Qcells, Canadian Solar, and others — is a direct legal contract between you and the manufacturer. Sunnova's bankruptcy does not affect it. You can file warranty claims directly with your manufacturer right now, without Sunnova.

What happened

Sunnova Energy filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 8, 2025, in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. The company served over 441,000 customers across 50+ states and had accumulated approximately $8.9 billion in long-term debt. Contributing factors included rising interest rates, policy changes in California, the Trump administration's termination of a $3 billion DOE loan guarantee, and an industry-wide decline in residential solar installations.

Through a court-supervised restructuring process, substantially all of Sunnova's assets were acquired by Solaris Assets LLC, with day-to-day operations transitioning to SunStrong Management. If you had a Sunnova lease or PPA, SunStrong is now your servicer.

What this means for your system

✅ Your panel and inverter warranties — still fully valid

Sunnova financed and managed your system but did not manufacture the equipment. Your panel warranty is with the manufacturer (Enphase, SolarEdge, Qcells, Canadian Solar, etc.) and remains completely unaffected by Sunnova's bankruptcy. File claims directly with the manufacturer.

✅ Leases and PPAs — transferred to SunStrong

If you had a Sunnova lease or Power Purchase Agreement, your contract was transferred to SunStrong Management as part of the bankruptcy restructuring. Continue making payments as instructed by SunStrong to avoid service disruption. Contact SunStrong directly for questions about your agreement.

✅ Monitoring access — contact manufacturer directly

If you've lost monitoring access, contact your inverter manufacturer directly. For Enphase systems, visit enphase.com/support to transfer system ownership. For SolarEdge, email monitoring@solaredge.com with your system serial number.

⚠️ Sunnova service warranty — uncertain

Sunnova's own service and workmanship warranties are subject to the bankruptcy proceedings. While the court approved honoring existing obligations during the restructuring period, long-term enforceability depends on how SunStrong handles inherited obligations. Get any service commitments in writing from SunStrong.

What to do right now — step by step

  1. Confirm your system is still producing power. Check your Enphase or SolarEdge monitoring app. If you've lost access, contact the manufacturer directly to transfer monitoring to your name.
  2. Find out if SunStrong is your new servicer. If you had a Sunnova lease or PPA, contact SunStrong Management to confirm your account transfer and get your new account details in writing.
  3. Locate your original installation documents. Find your contract, permit, equipment specs, and warranty documents. These are essential for any manufacturer warranty claims.
  4. Identify your panel and inverter manufacturers. Common Sunnova equipment includes Enphase microinverters and various panel brands. Check your contract or look at the equipment labels.
  5. If your system has a problem, file a manufacturer warranty claim now. Don't wait. Contact your panel and inverter manufacturers directly. Solar Warranty Navigator generates a complete, ready-to-send claim letter specific to your equipment in under 5 minutes.
  6. If Sunnova owes you money, file a creditor claim. If you're owed a refund or compensation from Sunnova directly, you may be able to file a proof of claim in the bankruptcy proceedings. Contact Kroll, the claims agent, at (888) 975-5436.

⚠️ Important: The SunStrong situation is separate from your manufacturer warranty. Even if SunStrong is unresponsive or disputes your credits, you can still file manufacturer warranty claims for hardware defects independently. These are two different issues requiring two different approaches.
